POST OPERATIVE INFORMATION-Thyroidectomy
Post thyroidectomy care is crucial for a smooth recovery and to minimize complications.
Here are some general guidelines:
PAIN MANAGEMENT
You may experience some discomfort or pain after the surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to manage this. Take them as directed and report any severe or persistent pain.
WOUND CARE
Keep incision site clean and dry. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for the incision site, and when to remove any dressings. Report any infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or drainage to your doctor.
ACTIVITY
Avoid strenuous activity and rest for the first few days after surgery.
Gradually increase your activity level as tolerated, but avoid heavy lifting or intense physical activity until your follow-up after surgery and ask when you can resume.
MEDICATIONS
If you had a total thyroidectomy, thyroid supplements may be required to replace the horomones normally produced by the thyroid gland.
If you had a hemithyroidectomy, Dr. Samy may have you go for blood work after surgery to decide if you need a thyroid supplement. This would be given to you at your follow-up after surgery.
Take the thyroid supplements as prescribed.
DIET
A soft diet or liquid diet may be recommended initially, gradually advancing to solid foods as tolerated. Make sure to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet to support healing.
VOICE REST
You may experience temporary hoarseness or voice changes. Rest your voice as much as possible and avoid yelling or speaking loudly.
MONITORING FOR COMPLICATIONS
Complications to watch for are difficulty breathing, severe pain, excessive bleeding, or changes in voice or swallowing function. Contact your surgeon immediately if you experience any concerning symptoms.
EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Coping with the physicial and emotional aspects of thyroid surgery may be challenging. Seek support from friends, family, or a support group, and do not hesitate to discuss any concerns or anxieties with your surgeon or primary healthcare provider.
FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS
Dr. Samy's secretary books the surgery and follow-up after at the same time. Look through your surgery papers Dr. Samy's office gave you either at your appointment or emailed to you. If lost, contact the office for a follow-up. It is essential to have a follow-up with your surgeon after any surgery.
It is essential to follow your surgeon's instructions closely and to reach out if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery period. Every individual's recovery process and wound care may vary; it may be helpful to ask for these instructions be written down for you.
