Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus cavities, often triggered by the common cold, viral infections or allergies.

Symptoms may include thick green, yellow mucus draining from your nose, pain, pressure, swelling or tender nasal passages, headaches, and nasal congestion.

Treatments may include antibiotics for bacterial sinusitis, ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain, or decongestants. A warm wet towel on your face may help with the facial pressure.

Chronic sinusitis may require advanced treatments such as endoscopic sinus surgery to restore sinus function and alleviate symptoms. A CT scan may help with diagnosis and determine the severity, after which a referral to an ENT may be necessary.

Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, results from inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould, or flakes of skin from certain animals. Our practice offers treatments to help lessen the symptoms. In some cases, a referral to an allergist for allergy testing could be considered.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are growths in the nasal passages that can cause congestion and difficulty breathing. In most cases minimally invasive procedures, such as endoscopic sinus surgery and nasal polypectomy, are done to remove the nasal polyps and restore normal breathing.

Stridor or Noisy Breathing

Noisy breathing or Stridor is a high-pitched sound that occurs when breathing in or out, and is most likely a sign of an airway problem. If this occurs, seek medical treatment from your family physician or nurse practitioner. If you do not have one, you should seek medical attention at your closest emergency department. A referral to an ENT or respirologist may be necessary.
